Dachshunds are unique in the canine world because they come in three distinct coat types, each with its own grooming needs. Regardless of the coat, Dachshunds are moderate shedders and are not considered a hypoallergenic breed. If you have severe pet allergies, it is important to spend time with the breed before committing.

The three coat varieties include:

1. Smooth-Haired: A short, dense, and shining coat that requires very little maintenance beyond a quick wipe-down or weekly brushing.

2. Long-Haired: Features sleek, glistening, often wavy hair that is longer under the neck, trunk, and behind the legs. This variety requires regular brushing to prevent tangles and mats.

3. Wire-Haired: Consists of a tight, thick, hard outer coat with a finer, somewhat softer undercoat. They are famous for their “beard” and bushy eyebrows.

Colors and Patterns: According to breed standards, Dachshunds come in a stunning array of colors. The most common are Red, Black and Tan, and Chocolate and Tan. You will also find beautiful patterns such as Dapple (merle), Piebald, and Brindle.

Grooming & Health Maintenance:

• General Care: Unlike many breeds, Dachshunds are relatively “wash and wear” dogs and don’t have a strong “doggy smell.” Bathing should be done only as needed to avoid drying out their skin.

• The “Back” Rule: While grooming, always support a Dachshund’s entire length. Their long spines make them prone to IVDD, so they should never be picked up by the front legs alone.

• Nails & Ears: Because they aren’t as high-impact as herding dogs, their nails may not wear down naturally and require monthly trimming. Their floppy ears should be checked weekly for wax buildup or moisture to prevent infections.

• Dental Care: Small breeds are prone to dental issues, so regular teeth brushing is highly recommended to keep your Doxie healthy for years to come.
